NEB GPA calculator: marks to grades and GPA

Turn marks into NEB letter grades and grade points, then get the credit-hour weighted GPA the way SEE, Class 11 and Class 12 results are worked out. Theory and practical marks go in as separate components. Free, with no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.

Subjects and marks

One row per graded component. In grades 11–12 the theory paper and the practical or internal marks are graded separately, each with its own credit hours — use the flask button to add a practical row under a subject. The Grade 11/12 subjects and credit hours below are a sample: change them to match your own grade sheet.

Graded with the NEB letter grading table (Letter Grading Directive 2083): A+ 90% and above (4.0), A 80 (3.6), B+ 70 (3.2), B 60 (2.8), C+ 50 (2.4), C 40 (2.0), D 35 (1.6), NG below 35%. GPA = Σ(grade point × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours). Unofficial: the grade sheet issued by NEB or the school is the record.

The NEB grading scale

NEB grades each subject, or each component of a subject, by its percentage, using Schedule 1 of the Letter Grading Directive 2083. The same table applies to SEE (Class 10), Class 11 and Class 12.

For the original certificate in Classes 8, 10 and 12, the directive asks for at least D (35%) in theory and C (40%) in internal, subject by subject.

How the GPA is worked out

Each component gets a grade point from the table above. The GPA is the average of those grade points weighted by credit hours: multiply each grade point by the component's credit hours, add the results, and divide by the total credit hours. The answer is shown to two decimal places.

A worked example: English theory with 3 credit hours at A (3.6), English internal with 1 credit hour at A+ (4.0), and Nepali theory with 2.25 credit hours at B+ (3.2). The weighted points are 10.8 + 4.0 + 7.2 = 22.0, the credit hours add up to 6.25, and 22.0 ÷ 6.25 gives a GPA of 3.52.

A plain average of the same three grade points would be (3.6 + 4.0 + 3.2) ÷ 3 = 3.60. Because credit hours differ from subject to subject, only the weighted figure matches a grade sheet.

In Class 11 and Class 12 the theory paper and the practical or internal assessment are graded separately, each with its own credit hours, so a subject such as Physics is two rows: Physics (Theory) and Physics (Practical). Enter them that way in the calculator and each one is graded and weighted on its own.

What NG means, and what happens next

NG is the one result in the table that is not a grade, and it changes how the GPA is reported.

NG has no grade point

NG stands for Not Graded. A component below 35% gets no letter grade and no grade point, and there is no official GPA while any subject is NG.

It can be cleared

A student with NG in a subject can sit the grade-improvement exam for it. Once the subject is cleared it is graded, and the GPA can be worked out.

Theory 35%, internal 40%

The original certificate needs at least D (35%) in theory and C (40%) in internal, subject by subject. The calculator grades each row on the table and does not check this for you.

The unofficial figure

When a component is NG, the calculator still shows the GPA of the graded subjects, clearly labelled unofficial, so a student can see where the rest stands.

Common mistakes when working out a GPA

Most wrong GPAs come from one of these. The calculator avoids each of them.

  • Averaging grade points without weighting them by credit hours.
  • Rounding a percentage up before grading it: 89.99% is an A, not an A+.
  • Adding theory and practical marks into one percentage when the grade sheet grades them separately.
  • Counting an NG subject as zero points instead of withholding the GPA.
  • Using an older table: before the 2078 directive the lower bands were different and there was no NG.
  • Rounding each step along the way. Only the final GPA is rounded, to two decimals.

Report cards that work the grades out for you

SchoolEasy report cards use your school's own grade scale, set once in Settings: the letters, the minimum percentage for each and their grade points. Teachers enter marks in a spreadsheet-style mark sheet, or the AI assistant enters a whole sheet at once, and SchoolEasy works out each student's percentage, GPA and overall grade.

Report cards print as a PDF for one student or as a single PDF for a whole class section, and parents and students download their own.

  • Your own scale: letters, minimum percentages and grade points
  • Percentage, GPA and overall grade from the marks teachers enter
  • One PDF per student, or one for a whole class section
  • Exams, marks, report cards and admit cards are in the Free plan

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated in NEB results?

Each subject or component gets a grade point from the NEB table, from 4.0 for A+ down to 1.6 for D. Multiply each grade point by its credit hours, add them up and divide by the total credit hours. The result is reported to two decimal places.

What percentage do I need for an A+?

90% or more. 80% to under 90% is an A (3.6), and 70% to under 80% is a B+ (3.2). The bands are not rounded, so 89.99% is still an A.

What does NG mean on an NEB grade sheet?

Not Graded. A component below 35% gets no grade and no grade point, and the GPA is withheld until the student clears the subject through the grade-improvement exam.

Does this work as an NEB GPA calculator for Class 11 and Class 12?

Yes. Class 11 and Class 12 use the same grade table as SEE. Choose the Grade 11/12 sample, change the subjects and credit hours to match your grade sheet, and enter theory and internal marks as separate rows.

Are theory and practical marks graded separately?

In Class 11 and Class 12, yes: the theory paper and the practical or internal assessment are separate components, each with its own credit hours, so enter each as its own row. For the original certificate, the directive asks for at least D (35%) in theory and C (40%) in internal.

Are the credit hours in the samples official?

No. The SEE and Grade 11/12 samples use plausible credit hours to show the calculator working. Take the real figures for your subjects from your grade sheet or your school, and edit the rows to match.

Does the calculator save or send my marks?

No. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server. Print the result, or save it as a PDF from the print dialog, if you want to keep it.

Can a school use its own grading scale instead?

This calculator uses the NEB table only. The free marksheet template can switch to percentages only or to your own scale, and SchoolEasy report cards use whatever scale the school sets in Settings.
